Hey Beauties! Today is the Third day of my countdown towards Memorial Day! I’m really looking forward to continuing to celebrate this wonderful holiday through the #rememberingthroughmakeup campaign! If you didn’t join me yesterday or Wednesday, here’s a little insight to what I will be doing for the next few days:
What is Remembering Through Makeup?
It’s a way members of the beauty community can honor KIA (Killed in Action), MIA (Missing Action), and POW (Prisoners of War) on a deeper level by commemorating a fallen hero.
How Does it Work?
As we countdown to memorial day, I will post a makeup look representing each branch, and with it a fallen hero from that branch. It will contain information on that hero, along with resources to learn more about them. Here is my schedule:
Wednesday, May 20th: Air Force Day
Thursday, May 21st: Army Day
Friday, May 22nd: Coast Guard Day (Today)
Saturday, May 23rd: Marine Corp Day
Sunday, May 24th: Navy Day
Monday, May 25th: Memorial Day/ Red, White, and Blue
Feel free to join in and use #rememberingthroughmakeup
Today’s Hero: Douglas Munro
Munro enlisted in the US Coast guard in 1938 with hopes of making it his career. So by the time the United States entered World War II in 1941, Munro had already risen the ranks to Signalman, 1st Class (visit his Wikipedia page here and scroll down to “ranks” for a better understanding of what his rank means).
On September 27th 1942 at the Guadalcanal, Munro was in command of a small group of Higgins boats tasked with dropping off 500 Marines planning to drive out the Japanese and establish a base on the Island. However, the Japanese were more than ready to attack. Munro quickly sent out 5 small boats to rescue the Marines. As these boats were way too small to rescue all the men at once, Munro and the other 4 boats made multiple trips amongst open fire from the Japanese. As the last of the Marines were successfully rescued, Munro took a fatal hit, his last words being, “Did they make it?”
Douglas Munro received the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart posthumously by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 27th, 1943.

Coast Guard Day Makeup
So, there’s a large amount of blue in the military, so when coming up with a Coast Guard inspired look with red and blue, I wanted to focus heavily on the red. Looking at the Coast Guard colors, theirs are a lot more bright and fun than any of the other branches. So naturally I used this as an opportunity to create a nice fun, orangey-red smokey eye with a little blue eyeliner hiding behind my lashes.

We’re over half way through the #rememberingthroughmakeup Memorial Day Countdown! Feel free to join me tomorrow for Marine day!
