Hey Beauties! Today is the second day of my countdown towards memorial day! I’m really looking forward to continuing to celebrate this wonderful holiday through the #rememberingthroughmakeup campaign! If you didn’t join me yesterday, here’s a little insight to what I will be doing for the next few days:
What is Remembering Through Makeup?
It’s a way members of the beauty community can honor KIA (Killed in Action), MIA (Missing Action), and POW (Prisoners of War) on a deeper level by commemorating a fallen hero.
How Does it Work?
As we countdown to memorial day, I will post a makeup look representing each branch, and with it a fallen hero from that branch. It will contain information on that hero, along with resources to learn more about them. Here is my schedule:
Wednesday, May 20th: Air Force Day
Thursday, May 21st: Army Day (Today)
Friday, May 22nd: Coast Guard Day
Saturday, May 23rd: Marine Corp Day
Sunday, May 24th: Navy Day
Monday, May 25th: Memorial Day/ Red, White, and Blue
Feel free to join in and use #rememberingthroughmakeup
Today’s Hero: Freddie Stowers
Corporal Freddie Stowers was a part of the 371st Infantry Regiment in the first world war. For those of you who aren’t familiar with military history, the 371st Regiment was specifically for enlisted African Americans and under the command of the French Army. If you’d like to read more into the history of the 371st Regiment, you can read this very well cited Wikipedia article.
Stowers was killed in action on September 28th, 1918 during the attack on Hill 188 in Champagne Marne, France. Squad leader in his company, he motivated and pushed his men forward through enemy fire, ultimately ending in the capture of the hill.
Before his death, Stowers and his men were able to push through two enemy trenches. Between the first and the second trench, he received a severe injury which ended up taking his life shortly after. Motivated by his bravery and excellent leadership, Stower’s men continued to move through enemy territory.
Because they were not awarded to African Americans in World War I, the Medal of Honor was given to Stowers posthumously in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.
To read more about Corporal Stowers, you can read the following articles by worldwar1centennial.org, Corporal Freddie Stowers awarded Medal of Honor for Service and Sacrifice in WWI and The Story if Freddie Stowers, the first African American Recipient of the WWI Medal of Honor.
Army Day Makeup
For my Army inspired look, I wanted to play with some glitter for the first time and do something super bold! In comparison to the Air Force logo (which is more sleek), the Army logo is a lot brighter and more noticeable. I mean, have you ever had to actually look that hard to notice an Army sticker on someone’s car?
Though it does look like I’m going to prom, I feel like my eye makeup reflects the colors of the Army really well. To learn about what products I used for this look, check out my post on instagram.
I’m really looking forward to tomorrow (Coast Guard Day). If you want to join in, it’s not too late!
XOXO
